New publisher joins USA Today

USA Today (@USATODAY) named Larry Kramer (@lkramer) as publisher. He previously served as the president of CBS Digital Media from March 2005 to December 2006. Prior to joining the company, he founded MarketWatch. Before that, he served as vice president of news, sports and marketing for Data Broadcasting Corp. Staff changes at Oregon paper

Sports editor and columnist James Day and reporter Alan Gustafson have left their positions at the Statesman Journal in Salem, Ore. Day joined the paper in 2002 and Gustafson in 1982. Peter Martini has replaced Day as interim sports editor. David Newhouse stepped down as editor of The Patriot-News (@patriotnews) in Mechanicsburg, Pa. He is replaced by Cate Barron (@catebarron), who most recently served as executive editor since April 2010. Paul Steiger will step down as editor in chief at ProPublica at the end of 2012. Managing editor Stephen Engelberg will succeed him, effective in 2013.
