CBS Television Network recently announced that Dan Bartlett has joined CBS News as a political analyst. He will provide on-air analysis on political issues, including the Democratic and Republican National Conventions among other things. Bartlett most recently served as counselor to the president from January 2005 to July 2007. Before that, he served as the assistant to the president for communications and White House communications director from June 2002 to January 2005. The Navigator regrets to inform its readers that Leroy Sievers, a commentator for NPR/National Public Radio's Morning Edition, passed away on Aug. 15 after a battle with cancer. Sievers wrote a blog called My Cancer on npr.org and was also a podcaster for the Web site. He had been a journalist since the 1980s, and worked at ABC Television Network's Nightline for 14 years. Prior to that, Sievers worked at CBS Television Network for almost ten years. During his career, he covered more than a dozen wars, including Desert Storm, Rwanda, Somalia, El Salvador, Nicaragua and many others.

The Associated Press recently named Steven Komarow the Washington, D.C. bureau's deputy bureau chief. His duties are effective immediately. Komarow formerly served as the senior deputy international news editor after returning to the news service in May 2006 as an assistant international news editor. Before rejoining AP, he served in many capacities for USA Today, including national security and Iraq reporter, reporter from Central and Eastern Europe and a defense correspondent. Journalism veteran Robert Novak has retired from his position as political columnist at the Chicago Sun-Times. As The Navigator reported before, he has been on medical leave after being diagnosed with a brain tumor. Novak announced his immediate retirement on Aug. 4. NBC Television Network announced yesterday that Mark Whitaker, senior vice president at NBC News, has been named Washington, D.C. bureau chief. His duties start immediately. The position was open due to the untimely death of Tim Russert. Whitaker will have executive oversight of Meet the Press and the network's election and political coverage. Whitaker joined NBC News in May 2007 and formerly served as the editor of Newsweek from 1998 to 2006.
