Singular
Creators of Singular hone in on the single community in L.A.
By Terri Rieck
Marriage equals happiness, right? The single, happy and over-30 population is working hard to debunk that myth. But none are working harder than the creators of Singular, a new regional lifestyle magazine written specifically for the educated, high-income, single adult over 30 living in Los Angeles.
Launching in September 2008, Singular will give a positive and supportive springboard for the “singulars” in Los Angeles.
“Most importantly, we want our readers to connect with like-minded singles who are confident in their lives and lifestyle choices,” Editorial Director Kim Calvert said.
Singular is the brainchild of David Wright, publisher and CFO, who initially wanted to form a company that put together events for Los Angeles’ single community. From this idea came Singular Communications, which includes the print magazine, event company and online community, SingularCity.
Singular has a leg up on competition like Los Angeles Magazine, Los Angeles Confidential and Angeleno because it is the only publication focused solely on the single community. There will be no “how to find your perfect mate” articles in this magazine. “We give a positive, supportive message of acceptance to single people, so essentially no one else is doing exactly what we are,” Calvert added.
For these singulars, the world is their oyster and they have the freedom to live exactly how they like. Editorial content includes personality profiles of famous or just plain admirable Los Angeles singles, columns written by singularly focused writers, beauty and grooming coverage, general interest pieces and lifestyle pieces for readers who are free to have fun.
With interests ranging from entertaining at home to adventure sports, the magazine hopes to encompass the diverse interests of the community.
“We believe in the importance of creating an intimate relationship with our reader, of supplying them with entertaining and informative content that provides hours of reading enjoyment,” Calvert said.
In Every Issue
- Cocktail Chat – Features news, trends, fun things to do, interesting factoids, fashion, tech gadgets and other topics
- Looking Good – Covers anything related to looking great, including beauty and grooming
- Mind, Body, Spirit – Focuses on mental and physical health
- Singular Calendar – Presents events for the Singular community
Making the Pitch
“We are always looking for personality profiles, new products, upscale luxury items, travel, fun things to do, fashion, fitness, health, entertainment and more,” Calvert said.
She prefers to receive all pitches via e-mail. She stressed that the magazine was not a shopping magazine or a PR vehicle.
The lead time for features is four to six months, but newsy items that would go in Cocktail Chat can get in as early as six weeks in advance.
Another important tip is for PR professionals to check the editorial calendar for seasonal coverage. “After the premier issue in September, November/December will be a holiday issue, January /February will focus on nightlife and friendship, March/April is the spring style and fashion issue, May/June is travel and destinations and July/August is home decor,” Calvert explained.
“Editorial is king for us and we are always looking for fun, new and exciting topics to share with our audience as long as it relates to them.”
