Though Americans are working longer hours than ever, many still manage to squeeze in a yoga class or prepare a delicious organic meal after a long day at the office.  These health-conscious habits and activities help professionals counter high-stress jobs with slower, healthier diversions.

Narrowing in on this demographic, Tasting Table partnered with Vital Juice to rebrand the latter as Good Taste, a short daily email providing information and inspiration for healthy food, drink and cooking.

Summing up the edition’s mission, editor Karen Palmer said that “Good Taste is designed for the wellness-minded epicurean: someone who loves and enjoys good food, but wants to live a balanced lifestyle.”

Unlike Vital Juice, which covered health, fitness, beauty and nutrition, Palmer explained that Good Taste focuses only on full-flavored healthy food.

“The edition isn't obsessed with calories, exercise or fat content,” she explained. “The edition strikes a great balance for readers who want to make smart choices, but aren't afraid to indulge.”

In its brief history, Good Taste has featured chef-recommended recipes from a variety of culinary traditions, artisanal truffles, lacto-fermented vegetables, organic vino verde wine and all-natural sparkling water. For the uncurious palate, this is not.

In her introductory post on Good Taste, Palmer also promises information on cookbooks, cocktails, and original, seasonal recipes from Tasting Table’s test kitchen.

To make the editorial content as digestible as the food it features, each Good Taste email contains just one lead story, followed by links to supplemental reading. Editorial brevity allows each story to gain more traction with a readership that’s always on the go, and it surely eases the pressure on Palmer, who is Good Taste’s sole editor.

Given her background, Palmer fits in well at Good Taste. She is a former senior editor at DailyCandy, a regional online to-do guide, and has an educational background in the culinary arts.

In her new role, she oversees all editorial content for Good Taste while working closely with the rest of the Tasting Table staff.

To cross-promote the site to Tasting Table’s existing readership, Palmer recently guest-edited Tasting Table’s national Facebook page, where she posted recipes and healthy food and drink ideas.

She has also been active on Twitter, promoting the edition and responding to readers through Good Taste’s handle and Tasting Table’s national handle.

Additionally, she is using social media to host a totebag giveaway contest, and has other promotional events on the horizon.

“Next week, we'll be holding a Good Taste sweepstakes, where readers can enter for a chance to win a $500 gift basket filled with artisanal food items selected personally by me,” she noted.

Making the Pitch

“Good Taste will generally cover new products/food items/biodynamic wines/etc., as well as dining and drinking trends with a wellness bent,” Palmer explained.

She also noted that “publicists should keep in mind that Good Taste is not obsessed with calorie counting/low-fat items, but instead focuses on the natural, organic and sustainable whenever possible.”

The best way to pitch is by email.
